The first was installed in 1872 on Boulevard de la Villette. Like the next 49, it was financed by the wealthy English philanthropist, who also designed the shape. Today, there are 107 of them throughout the capital. They continue to be manufactured in Haute-Marne, in the foundries of GHM Sommevoire.
